We Want Woman

20 Oct

I just returned from my son’s Boy Scout camporee (which basically means lots of boys, lots of testosterone, and lots of smelly clothes). When I was a scout, women were forbidden to come on camping trips –there are just some things that we just didn’t want them to know and it just would have ruined everything to have them there. Tonight, as in every troop event I have been on, there were women – gross me out! So I have been thinking both about women and my scouting experience. One aspect of scouting is Order of the Arrow, which is an elected leadership honor. The OA has a motto – WWW which means We Want Women (at least it did when I was a scout!). Actually, if I told you what it really meant, I’d have to kill you. So you’ll just have to keep with the teenage definition we gave it. In truth, I think scouting is probably better with women participating. Our troop has a boy with Downs Syndrome and his mother (or father) is with him at every event and our troop welcomes her and other women as well. If women had been involved in scouting when I was young, I probably would have never gotten a swirlie (if you don’t know what a swirlie is, you can ask a scout from my era. Trust me you are better off NOT knowing). Men leaders in my day either just let it pass (not referring to other things scouts do on campouts) or are just too full from Dutch oven cooked peach cobbler to walk around and see what REALLY happened to young scouts. So I am thankful for the difference woman make in scouting. My friend Kathy Roth, founder of the Jeff Roth Cycling Foundation, emailed me about other women making a difference – Women Writing for (a) Change. This is an organization, a writing center of sorts, located in Cincinnati founded by Mary Pierce Brosmer. Women Writing for (a) Change was initially started with the idea that, through writing and sharing their work, women might make systemic changes in their lives, and thus, the world. Over the past 15 plus years, it’s grown beyond that. There are writing workshops for families and men as well. In the summer, there are writing camps for girls. The biggest focus remains women.I also learned today about Lending Promise another very cool project that involves woman.  I must confess tonight, I feel like a womanizer and the great thing, is that my wife is okay with it….just for tonight.

What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas

26 Sep

I am in Las Vegas today and it’s probably good that much of what happens here stays here. Every time I come here, I am immediately ready to leave. It’s just not one of my favorite places. I am speaking at the Sales Mastery Forum, a conference produced by Harris Hoopis who is one of the top agents in the Northwestern Mutal Life Insurance Company. Harry is rich in many ways and I suspect after I get to know him even better, I’ll find out how he is helping people in Chicago have more rich lives.

Before I come to a city to speak, I always like to find the names of people who are difference makers so I emailed several people who lived there before my trip. One person I contacted was a self-made entreprenuer who is known for flamboyant clothes and a flashy lifestyle. I asked her if she knew any REAL Rich People – people who were rich because they were making a difference, she replied with this:

Not in my crowd!!! If I do they are too subtle for me…also for Vegas.

It that’s true, it’s also sad. But perhaps the people who do make a difference here are so humble that they too believe…what happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas.

Trivia and more:

Who was the person who made the statement for which this post is titled?  First correct answer will win a cheap and highly superficial prize!

One of my all time favorite Broadway shows Momma Mia is playing at the Mandalay Bay hotel where I am staying. If you ever get they chance, go see it, it’s truly one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. What’s your favorite Broadway play or musical and why?

Sketch Casting

I never cease to be amazed at the innovations people develop. Check out Sketch Casting. Branding expert and good friend Bruce Turkel told me about it. Click here for the second lesson. Looks like a cool tool for the blog oool. What cool tools have you heard about lately?

National Underwear Day

8 Aug

Apparently, I blew it. Yesterday was National Underwear Day – so many choices, so little time. In the haste of all the celebrations (yesterday was my 20th Independence Day Celebration), I just didn’t get a chance to fully celebrate the day. However, somehow, somewhere the day got it’s justice. When I read about National Underwear Day (a day created by companies that sell underwear), I was reminded of another day- Sunday Undie Day – a day created by a philanthropist Henri Landwirth. This year, this event collected 77,557 pairs of underwear(why is underwear a pair anyway?) and diapers for poor and homeless families in North East Florida.

Look for Henri to appear on the Richest People in America list for this year. I would bet Henri didn’t pose yesterday in his underwear for anyone. So don’t feel bad if you missed it. You’ll probably feel better by donating some underwear than donning some and posing in public.

07-07-07

8 Jul

Paul Harvey reminded me yesterday that it was 7-7-7. It was a day to have good luck, according to the story. Last year, my birthday fell on 6-6-6. It was supposed to be a bad day (alas, other than turning another year old, it was a pretty good day). I think 8-8-8 will be a good day too – as will be 9-9-9. It’s probably a good thing there is no 13th month. If there were, I’d plan a party starting at 1300 hours on the 13th floor and invite at least 1313 people for a 13 course dinner. Everything is exactly how it’s supposed to be as I don’t think I know 1313 people I’d want to invite.

What are the chances?

30 Jun

timclub.jpg I had planned to introduce my blog readers to my new blog X365 in which I plan to do some form of exercise everyday for an entire year. I had also been thinking about blogging about my iDeas for Apple iProducts (after changing a diaper at 1:00 am and my wife changing another a few hours later, I am thinking the leading candidate is the iChanger). However I was caught red-handed (and now red-faced) yesterday afternoon right in front of the Last Chance strip club. I wouldn’t be writing about something as embarrassing as this had I not received the following email from my friend Randy Small:“I know I shouldn’t be asking you this, but just out of curiosity, what the heck were you doing at the Last Chance strip club on Friday afternoon???? I tried to honk my horn at you as I drove by, but my horn’s broken. (Randy haven’t you seen the bumper sticker that says, ‘Horn broken, watch for middle finger?’ ) Do we need to have an intervention?”Well, er, Randy (and anyone else who may have seen me). I was, er… um…. ah… I was changing my flat tire that just happened to occur right in front of the club. Don’t believe that huh? Okay, I was picking up trash. Yeah, that’s it. Keep Blount Beautiful. That’s my motto. Actually, I was campaigning to end adult entertainment in our area – Keep Knoxville Klean. Yeah, that’s the story. No, okay the real reason, I was going undercover to apply for a job (after all they were hireing) to expose (no pun intended) the unfair labor practices in the adult entertainment industry. Since I know the real reason will never fly with Randy and the group that will likely hear about this, I offer the excuses ideas above. The real story is that I was there for a friend. Yes, I was at the Last Chance as a photographer (and it wasn’t to take a picture of the 1 ugly lady advertised on the sign!). Before you tar and feather me, know that I went there to take pictures of the sign; I have been wanting to for several months. Late last year, I was speaking at a convention with my professional speaker colleague Mike McKinley. Mike uses hundreds of photographs in his program and I am going to see him next week at my National Speakers Association convention. Since I knew I would see Mike, I figured it was my last chance to get the picture at the Last Chance (since believe it or not, I just don’t frequent the Last Chance or even the area where it’s located regularly). As one of my favorite columnist Dave Barry says, “I am not making this up!”. The ‘funny’ thing about this situation is I remember thinking “What if someone sees me?” but then I thought, “What are the chances?”. Well it turns out the chances were pretty good. It was during rush hour traffic along one of the busiest highways in the area and I parked my car right under the sign! After my friend Randy sent the email, I imagined a few newspaper headlines:

Former Cub Scout Leader given too many chances

Father of Five kicked out of home: Wife: “I gave him one Last Chance”

Inspirational Speaker gets chance “inspiration”

No chance for future public office for Richardson

Living Rich is about not being afraid to standout even when it means taking some good (and not so good) natured ribbing. I knew there was a risk of being seen somewhere that I PROMISE I have never been before and now will NEVER go again. If I had only been X-ercising or perhaps waiting in line for an iPhone…fat chance.

I-Rich

29 Jun

I’ll admit it – I want to retire rich. Not because I want to have the luxury house, boat and car. I want to be like a college friend of mine who lives off 10% of his income and gives away 90%. So, of course, I am intrigued with programs like “The Millionaire Inside: Your Guide to Wealth” that will air Saturday June 30th at 9:00 pm on CNBC. David Bach, Barbara Corcoran, Phil Town and Loral Langemeier are the money mentors and the segment tomorrow night will include my motivational speaker colleague Larry Winget. Tune in and let me know what you think…

***Happy Birthday to the Interstate Highway system. Seems like a good day to buy the Apple iPhone. I feel a blog coming with new “iInventions”… do you have suggestions? Winning entry gets my old cell phone. Sorry to be so brief but I must get my iSelf off my iChair and hurry to the iStore to go into iDebt, so I can be iHip with my iFriends on my iPhone. Looking forward to iBlogging with you soon…

Watch the spoof on the iPhone. iLaughed out loud.

Before and After

What happens when you leave an almost-3 year old alone with baby powder nearby????

Lessons in the school of hard knocks.

13 Jun

Early this morning, I was walking to my car reading the mail I had just picked up. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the truck five feet away but I didn’t see the cooper pipes extending several feet past the end of the truck. And POW! (like in the old Batman TV show) I plowed right into it. I uttered a Robin like phrase (Holy stupid pipes) as I grabbed my head.

Seems like there’s a lesson in that head bump. Don’t spend too much of life focusing only on the task that is right in front of you lest you find yourself somewhere you don’t want to be.

Coming soon a new blog: Xercise365…my plan to exercise everyday for one year. Care to join me?

Olympic moments and Idol time…

24 May

Today, I am having Olympic thoughts as tonight I speak for a Senior Olympic banquet and next week, I travel to Colorado Springs, CO to speak at the US Olympic training center. I am looking forward to both and am sure I will learn some things about perseverance, dedication, commitment, attitude, and more. The groups will likely have some things in common but they will be more different than they are alike. The Olympians I will be speaking to next week are paralympians. I am sure both experiences will create some blogable moments.

Colin Milmner, chief executive of the International Council of Active Aging, made some reading suggestions in a recent Wall Street Journal article and on the website:

Growing Stronger – Strength Training for Older Adults

Active Living Every Day

Fitness After 50

Last year, I read a great book Younger Next Year: A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You’re 80 and Beyond. Check it out and watch an inspirational video clip of one of the authors who is definitely Living Rich.

Live Rich today and while you are at it, live younger too.

Just for fun, I’d like to see an independent poll on the percentage of people who don’t give a flying flip that Jordin Sparks was crowned the newest and youngest “American Idollast night. I guess I would be in the extreme minority as over 600 million people voted (more than 10 times the number of voters in the last presidental election). If you know the US population, you’ll know that that number exceeds the number of Americans. Perhaps we should let people vote online as much as they want. Better yet, let’s engage our presidential candidates in an Idol like competition. Would more people tune into to hear Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John McCain, and Rudy G singing than mudslinging?

Are we addicted to “Reality TV” or what? There are certainly idol time activities worthy of our attention but come on, it’s getting ridiculous that Reality TV is becoming the reality life of so many. I’m voting them all off the island.
